OUR MISSION
The Mission of the ETMC is to preserve and to protect our cultural heritage and ancestral sacred sites, namely of the Esselen, Rumsen, Chalone, Sureño, Chunchunes and Guatcharrone people, which includes but is not limited to the villages of Achasta, Chalon, Echilat, Ensen, Excelen, Esslenajan, Ixchenta, Jojopan, Kuchun, Pachepas, Sargenta-Ruc, Soccoronda, & Tucutnut, located within sacred pre-historic and historic tribal lands of Monterey County, California.

OUR GOVERNANCE
The Esselen tribe is a sovereign nation, which is a status that pre-dates the U.S. and is recognized by the Constitution and federal law. This means they have the right to govern themselves and their territory, a power that is distinct from state or federal authority.
Our governance structure consists of a Tribal Council and a Non-Profit Organization. The Tribal Council, made up of Esselen tribal members convenes monthly to address significant issues and support various committees, including Educational, Cultural Resource and Legislative. Alongside our Non-Profit Organization, includes tribal members and community volunteers, we aim to support the tribe in its mission to cultural traditions and preserve the heritage of historic tribes. This is achieved by applying for grants, managing accepted grants, and exploring additional fundraising opportunities.
We are committed to fulfilling our objectives and ensuring the continuity our cultural practices for future generations. Join us in honoring and celebrating the essence of our tribe. It is important to note that the organization is named the Esselen Tribe of Monterey County, its efforts extend beyond the Esselen Tribe to encompass the protection and preservation of the Esselen, Rumsen, Chalone, Sureño, Chunch, and Guatcharrone peoples. This includes, but is not limited, the villages of Achasta, Chalon, Echilat, Ensen, Excelen, Esslenajan, Ixchenta, Jojopan, Kuchun, Pachepas, Sargenta-Ruc, Soccoronda and Tucutnut, all located within the sacred pre-historic and historic tribal of Monterey County, California
